San Antonio Bride's Guide to Flawless Foundation: Airbrush Makeup or Traditional Makeup

February 21, 2019

As a makeup artist in San Antonio, I receive many questions from my clients. The top two questions that I receive from my San Antonio brides to be are “What’s the difference between airbrush makeup and traditional makeup?” and “which makeup option is best for me?”

With photos that last a lifetime and all eyes glued on her as she walks down the aisle, it goes without saying that every bride wants to look her absolute best on her wedding day. And the key to finishing off a gorgeous gown and stunning locks is a great makeup application—which starts with flawless foundation. But with the makeup industry constantly evolving (and so many new products and techniques to choose from), how do you know which foundation application is right for you?  Both airbrushed makeup and traditional makeup are beautiful, long wearing choices but I will break it down for you!

The most popular makeup choice of my Texas brides is airbrushed makeup. This is because it provides the more natural finish and is waterproof (great for happy tears and hot Texas summer weddings!)

How airbrushed makeup is used: A small amount of liquid makeup that is designed for an airbrush machine is dropped into the makeup chamber of the airgun. When the compressor is turned on and the trigger on the air gun is pulled, a light spray of makeup is misted onto the skin. Since airbrushing requires less product for more coverage, due to the spray technique application process, a minimal amount of makeup goes a long way. As it is such a fine mist, your true skin tone shows through to create a natural finish.

Why should you choose airbrushed makeup for your Texas wedding? I suggest airbrushed makeup to clients whose skin does not require a lot of color correction and cover up. Clients who want their beautiful freckles to show through or who do not have much skin discoloration. I also recommend airbrushed makeup to clients who aren’t used to wearing much makeup because it feels lighter on the skin. Airbrushed makeup works best on skin that is hydrated and super moisturized. I suggest beginning a nightly regimen of thoroughly moisturizing the skin once the airbrushed option is chosen to ensure that the makeup does not become flaky on your skin.

The airbrush makeup brand that I prefer to use is Temptu because it is long wearing, waterproof, and does not transfer on to clothing. Texas brides do not have to worry about their makeup melting in the Texas heat!

Traditional makeup is also a beautiful choice! It is more versatile than airbrushed makeup  because of its creamier texture.

How traditional makeup is used: Traditional makeup can be either cream or powdered makeup. It is applied with brushes or sponges. I’m a brush kind of gal so I prefer to use brushes over sponges when applying traditional makeup.

I suggest traditional makeup over airbrushed makeup when more color correcting and a fuller coverage is needed. Clients who have some skin discoloration or want to cover their freckles or skin imperfections should choose traditional makeup.

I prefer to use the Graftobian HD Makeup collection when using traditional makeup. It supplies the skin with a very natural, flawless application. This HD makeup looks amazing in photos and will last throughout your event. I’ve had clients report to me that even after crying during the ceremony and dancing the night away, their traditional makeup still looked perfect!

When it comes down to choosing between airbrushed makeup or traditional makeup, it all depends on your skin type and what you are comfortable wearing. Whether you are a bride getting ready for your wedding day or have a big event coming up, it’s so important to take care of your skin. There is a glow and smoothness that only healthy skin can achieve. No makeup can give you that glow. Make sure to drink lots of water, eat healthily, use a good skincare regimen and you will see a difference in your skin.
